Mrs. Sarah Ursula "Sula" Bowers Harris, age 85, of Charlotte died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003, at Britthaven of Charlotte.
Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003, at Reins- Sturdivant Chapel with Dr. Ricky A. Woods, pastor of First Baptist Church West in Charlotte officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.
Mrs. Harris was born Jan. 25, 1918 in Wilkes County to Lee and Gertrude Glenn Bowers. She graduated from Lincoln Heights High School in 1935 and married Douglas Wilson Harris Sr. In North Wilkesboro she established a small restaurant near the Woodlawn School and was known for her work as pianist and choir director for the First Baptist Church. In the mid-1950s, she relocated to New York City, where she worked as a secretary for the Salvation Army and later as a presser in the cleaning industry. While in New York, she studied acting at the Greenwich Village Theatre School of Off-Broadway directed by Gene Frankel and performed in community theatre. In the early 1970s, she relocated to Charlotte, where she worked with elementary school children and sang in the senior choir of the First Baptist Church West.
She is survived by one son, Douglas Wilson Harris Jr., a Smithsonian exhibited Civil Rights Movement photographer, documentary film-maker and Deputy Tribal Historic Preservation Officer of the Narragansett Indians, and his wife Wenonah of Wyoming, R.I.; one sister, Annie E. Bowers, a French and English educator, of Charlotte; one grandson, Douglas Toure Harris, who is a music producer in New York City; three granddaughters, Anemone Mars of Westerly, R.I., Sequahna- quewus Mars and Nish-keneneau Mars, both of Wyoming, R.I.; three great- grandsons, nieces and nephews, James Bowers Jr., Rachel Proctor, Keith Bowers, Sandra Bowers, Carl Bowers, Sandra Bowers, Carla Bowers, Allison Bowers and their children.
The family will receive friends at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Friday night from 6-8 p.m.
